Heart Chakra Anahata

Connection, warmth and self-compassion — what a closed heart looks like in ordinary life, and five practices that reliably soften it.

What Anahata governs

The heart chakra is associated with how freely you give and, more tellingly, how easily you receive. Most people who come to heart work can give endlessly. What they cannot do is let anyone in, ask for help, or take a compliment without a joke attached.

Signs of a block

Why the chest goes tight first

Protecting yourself is physical before it is emotional. Shoulders round forward, the ribcage stops expanding fully, the breath moves up into the throat. Change the posture and breath and the emotional part becomes reachable — which is why heart work starts with the body.

Five practices

Chest opening, three minutes

Hands clasped behind the back, shoulders rolling down, chest lifting. Breathe wide into the ribs, not up into the throat.

Hand on heart breathing

Five minutes, palm on the centre of the chest, inhale for four and exhale for six. Feel the breath under the hand.

The unsent message

Write what you would say to the person you are carrying something about. Send it or do not — the writing is the practice.

Accept one thing a day

Let someone help, pay, or compliment you without deflecting. For most people this is the hardest item on the list.

Speak to yourself as a friend

When the harsh internal line appears, rewrite it the way you would say it to someone you like. Out loud if you can.

A three-week plan

  1. Week 1: chest opening and hand-on-heart breathing daily. Body only.
  2. Week 2: add one accepted offer of help or one honest conversation a day.
  3. Week 3: write the unsent message, and rewrite three harsh internal lines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the heart chakra?Anahata, the fourth energy centre, sits at the centre of the chest and is associated with connection, warmth and self-compassion. It is the bridge between the three lower centres and the three upper ones.
What are the signs of a blocked heart chakra?Keeping people at arm's length, difficulty accepting help or compliments, resentment that lingers long after the event, a tight or heavy sensation in the chest, and being harsher with yourself than you would ever be with a friend.
How do I open my heart chakra?Start with chest-opening movement and slow breathing into the ribcage, then add one act of honest connection a day — a real conversation, a message you have been putting off, or letting someone help you.
How long does heart chakra healing take? The physical part — chest tension and breathing depth — often shifts in one to two weeks. The relational part takes longer because it depends on repeated real interactions, not just practice.
Is heart chakra work religious? No. Heal with Kiran offers non-religious, non-denominational wellness coaching. These are breath, movement and self-awareness practices, and they do not replace medical or mental-health care.
