What are the 7 chakras?
The seven chakras are a map of human experience, arranged along the spine from its base to the top of the head. Each one governs a different area of life — safety, emotion, confidence, love, expression, clarity and purpose. When an area of your life keeps struggling no matter what you try, the chakra map gives you a way to name it and work on it directly.
You do not need to believe anything to use the map. Treat it like a checklist: seven areas to review honestly, seven places where small daily practices compound.
The 7 chakras in order: quick reference
| # | Chakra | Colour | Governs | Blocked feels like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Root (Muladhara) | Red | Safety, money, stability | Constant anxiety about basics |
| 2 | Sacral (Svadhisthana) | Orange | Emotion, creativity, pleasure | Flatness, guilt, creative drought |
| 3 | Solar Plexus (Manipura) | Yellow | Confidence, will, follow-through | Self-doubt, procrastination |
| 4 | Heart (Anahata) | Green | Love, connection, forgiveness | Isolation, old grudges |
| 5 | Throat (Vishuddha) | Blue | Expression, honesty | The sentence that stays unsaid |
| 6 | Third Eye (Ajna) | Indigo | Clarity, intuition, perspective | Second-guessing every decision |
| 7 | Crown (Sahasrara) | Violet / white | Purpose, meaning, peace | Feeling lost or "what's the point" |
1. Root chakra — "Am I safe?"
The base of the system. It governs your sense of physical and financial safety. A strained root shows up as background anxiety about money, housing or health — even when things are objectively fine. Practice: ten minutes of barefoot walking or a simple written budget review. Stability is built through boring, repeated acts. Full root chakra guide →
2. Sacral chakra — "Can I feel?"
Governs emotion, creativity and the ability to enjoy things. Blocked, it feels like emotional flatness — nothing is terrible, nothing is good either. Practice: one creative act a week with no goal — cooking, sketching, dancing in the kitchen. Full sacral chakra guide →
3. Solar plexus chakra — "Can I act?"
Your confidence centre. When it struggles, you know exactly what to do and still don't do it. Self-doubt here is a pattern, not a personality trait. Practice: keep one small promise to yourself daily — the muscle is follow-through, not motivation. Full solar plexus guide →
4. Heart chakra — "Can I connect?"
The bridge between the lower (survival) and upper (meaning) centres. A closed heart looks ordinary from the outside: functioning fine, feeling little. Practice: one deliberate act of warmth a day — a real conversation, a thank-you said properly. Full heart chakra guide →
5. Throat chakra — "Can I say it?"
Governs expression. The sign of a block is the sentence you rehearse and never say — to your boss, your partner, your parent. Practice: voice journaling — two minutes of speaking honestly into your phone, unfiltered, then delete it. Full throat chakra guide →
6. Third eye chakra — "Can I see clearly?"
Your clarity centre. Blocked, every decision requires ten opinions and still feels wrong. Practice: five minutes of quiet before any big decision — no phone, no input. The first clear signal usually arrives in silence. Full third eye guide →
7. Crown chakra — "Does it mean anything?"
The centre of purpose and perspective. A strained crown feels like a low, persistent "what's the point" — even on good days. Practice: ten minutes a week of doing something with no productivity value — sitting in a park, watching the sky. Meaning needs unstructured time to surface. Full crown chakra guide →
How to start balancing: a 4-week approach
- Week 1 — Root only. Stabilise sleep, food and one money task. Nothing else.
- Week 2 — Add Sacral + Solar Plexus. One creative act, one kept promise per day.
- Week 3 — Add Heart + Throat. One warm connection, one honest sentence per day.
- Week 4 — Add Third Eye + Crown. Five minutes of quiet daily; ten minutes of unstructured time.
Bottom-up always. The upper centres open easily once the base holds — and collapse when it doesn't. For a centre-by-centre daily structure, see Chakra Balancing: 7 Techniques for Each Centre.
